Chevy Chase: Early Life and Family
Born in Manhattan in October 1943, Cornelius Crane Chase was named after his grandfather, Cornelius Vanderbilt Crane. Chevy Chase grew up in Woodstock where his father, Edward (Ned) worked as a book editor and magazine journalist, and his mother, Cathalene Parker, worked as a musician. Cathalene was adopted by her stepfather, Cornelius Vanderbilt Crane as a child and took his surname. Chevy was given his nickname by his grandmother and it comes from a medieval English song entitled, The Ballad of Chevy Chase. Chevy was born into an affluent family, but his social standing didn’t sit well with him.
Chase’s parents separated when he was young, and he had a difficult relationship with his mother. In a 2007 biography, he stated that he was abused both by his mother and his stepfather.
