Don Vito Corleone played by Marlon Brando

Marlon Brando is the patriarch of the Corleone crime family and the head of one of New York’s most powerful crime families.
Vito is a complex character, and Marlon Brando’s performance is legendary. Vito is a man of honor, but he’s also a ruthless gangster. He’s a family man, but he’s also willing to do whatever it takes to protect his business.
Marlon Brando won an Academy Award for his performance, and it’s easy to see why. He is one of the most iconic characters in all of the film.
Michael Corleone played by Al Pacino

Michael (played by Al Pacino) is Vito’s (Marlon Brando’s) son and the heir to the Corleone family business.
Michael starts out as a reluctant gangster, but he eventually takes on the role of his father. He’s a cold-blooded killer, but he’s also a family man.
Pacino’s performance is electrifying, and he completely inhabits the character of Michael Corleone. Sonny is one of the most iconic movie characters of all time and James Caan’s portrayal is a big part of that. He brings energy, intensity, and passion to the role, making you feel for Sonny even as you’re scared of him. It’s no wonder he was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance.
An actor of undeniably manly appeal, James Caan continued to surprise and delight audiences with his invigorating performances up until his death one week ago at the age of 82.
Tom Hagen played by Robert Duvall

Tom Hagen, played by Robert Duvall, is the Godfather’s, right-hand man. He’s a legal advisor and consigliere and he’s been with them since the beginning.
Hagen is a streetwise kid from the neighborhoods of New York City who Vito Corleone takes under his wing. He grows up to be a loyal and trusted advisor to the family, although he is not blood-related.
Hagen is the one who always has to talk things out and negotiate on behalf of the Corleones – he’s levelheaded and doesn’t have the same impulsive tendencies as some of the other members of the family.
Kay Adams-Corleone played by Diane Keaton

Kay Adams-Corleone was played by the one and only Diane Keaton in The Godfather. She was the electrifying girlfriend of Michael Corleone, and their courtship and marriage were one of the most intriguing aspects of the film.
Kay was loyal to her family, standing by them even when they became involved in organized crime. However, she ultimately couldn’t handle the lifestyle and left Michael. Diane Keaton’s performance was Oscar-nominated, and her chemistry with Al Pacino made for some truly memorable moments on screen.
Peter Clemenza played by Richard S. Castellano

Peter Clemenza was played by Richard S. Castellano in the film The Godfather. He is a top henchman and advisor to don Corleone.
Clemenza is first seen when he assassinates Salvatore Tessio on Michael’s orders. He later helps arrange false identities for Michael and his family so they can go into hiding from the FBI, who are investigating them for possible ties to organized crime.
When Michael becomes the new don, Clemenza continues to serve him faithfully. He carries out several of Michael’s orders, including the killing of riots Redgravelock in California and Solozzo in New York.
Fredo Corleone played by John Cazale

Fredo Corleone was originally played by John Cazale in The Godfather. He was a weak and inept man, often the butt of jokes within the family. His death at the hands of his younger brother, Michael, is one of the most pivotal moments in the movie.
Interestingly, Fredo was originally supposed to be killed much earlier on in the movie – but Cazale’s performance was so strong that Francis Ford Coppola decided to keep him around for a little longer. In fact, some say that Cazale’s death from cancer shortly after filming was complete was a big part of why The Godfather is so emotionally powerful.
Salvatore Tessio played by Abe Vigoda

Salvatore Tessio was played by the late Abe Vigoda in The Godfather. Tessio was a member of the Corleone family and one of Vito’s most loyal and trusted friends. He was also a close friend of Tom Hagen, the Family’s lawyer and Consigliere.
Tessio was born in Sicily and came to America with his family when he was young. His father worked as a tailor, but Tessio quickly learned the ways of crime on the streets of New York City. He became a close friend and associate of Sonny Corleone, Vito’s eldest son. When Sonny became head of the Family after Vito’s retirement, Tessio served as his chief lieutenant.
Connie Corleone played by Talia Shire

Connie is the youngest child of Vito and Carmella Corleone. She is a shy and soft-spoken woman, who often feels overshadowed by her older brothers. Connie is married to Carlo Rizzi and has two children, Michael Francis Rizzi and Anthony Rizzi.
Connie is fiercely loyal to her family and always eager to help out in any way she can. After her husband, Carlo, betrays the family, Connie becomes involved in a plot to kill him. She ultimately fails in this attempt, but her willingness to stand up for her loved ones earns her respect from them.
Carlo Rizzi played by Gianni Russo

If you’re a fan of The Godfather, then you’re probably well familiar with the character of Carlo Rizzi, played by Gianni Russo. For those who don’t know, Carlo is the husband of Connie Corleone and the brother-in-law of Sonny and Fredo Corleone.
Gianni Russo’s portrayal of Carlo Rizzi in The Godfather is fascinating because it’s one of the few cases where an actor was able to parlay a small role into a much more significant one. Not only did Russo have only a handful of scenes, but his character is also strikingly unsympathetic. Yet, through a combination of talent and luck, Russo ended up becoming one of the most memorable parts of the movie.
Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo played by Al Lettieri

The role of Virgil “The Turk” Sollozzo in The Godfather was played by Al Lettieri. He is a high-ranking member of the Sicilian Mafia who comes to America to make an offer to Don Vito Corleone to invest in his heroin business. Michael declines, and Sollozzo subsequently orders a hit on him.
